Hard to believe that June is nearly at a close, and then we are into July and time for the Cotswold Beer Festival at Postlip, but more of that later.
Our June meeting started out at the Northend Vaults where we enjoyed the ales they had on – Otter Ales, Wottershot; Wye Valley HPA; Fullers ESB and Dartmoor Jail Ale. Moving on up Northgate Street, we popped into the Imperial, The Abbey, The New Inn and ended up a little “off piste” at the Fountain, with a wide range of ales available. Later on in June, 15 of us headed off in a minibus, to take in the delights of some of the Forest pubs. Once again a good evening had by all, visiting the Rising Sun at Moseley Green; The Fountain at Parkend; and the Miners Arms at Whitecroft. If you haven’t come along on a trip before or had a break, please consider joining us for an evening. If the venues aren’t what you would like, then let us know as we will be designing the Autumn programme soon and all ideas are welcomed.
As you will know by now, we have introduced Pub of the Season into our calendar, and in my last update I announced The Fountain as the winner for Camra in Gloucester’s Summer Pub of the Season. We have agreed with Ben, the landlord the best date for the presentation, and it will be on Friday, 4th July. Well done Ben. Voting is open for nominations for our Autumn pub, and you can find the voting form on the website www.camraingloucester.org.uk If for any reason you have a problem with voting on line, you can let me or another member of the committee know, and we will register your nomination. Please put your best pub forward and give our pubs the recognition they deserve, it means a lot to the pub when they win.
Cotswold Beer Festival is put together by Gloucestershire Camra, and is on track to produce another cracking event. Tickets are available on the Gloucestershire website www.gloucestershirecamra.org.uk/cbf/ Anyone interesting in volunteering to help at the festival would be most welcome. Even if you can only offer one session, or help with the take down on the Sunday, every little helps to spread the load. Again you can volunteer through the website, or get in contact with me and I will pass your information on. First session is on Friday 18th July, and there are two sessions on Saturday, lunchtime and evening. Sunday is available but is very much subject to what beer is left. Camping is available this year too.
So July is going to be a busy month, there are a few things we have planned, or some events are just on in the area that you might want to consider visiting.
Frid 4th July 8.00 pm ~ Presentation to The Fountain Inn, Westgate Street, as our Summer Pub of the Season.
Wed 9th July 8.00 pm ~ Social meeting. Start at York House and move next door to Englands Glory
Fri 11th July 8.00 pm ~ Extra meeting this month at the Water Poet for their Cider Festival. For those who aren’t keen on cider, there will still be ale available
11th – 13th July Hereford Beer Festival. If anyone is interested in getting a group together to go to the festival on the 12th at lunchtime, let me know.
18th-20th July Cotswold Beer Festival at Postlip. Our bus is full for this event, but buses are available from and back to Cheltenham for all sessions.
26th Jul – 3rd Aug Rhythm and Blues Festival at the Cafe Rene and venues around the city are participating with other events. Not an organised Camra visit but one for the diary.
2nd August Train out to Worcester. Check the website for timings, or watch out for my next update which will be before the trip.
Things have been a bit quiet on the pub news this month, so if you know of anything you wish to share, please get in touch.
Look forward to seeing a few of you on Friday night at the Fountain.
